  36. Building CMake from Scratch
  37. ---------------------------
  38. UNIX/Mac OSX/MinGW/MSYS/Cygwin

  40. You need to have a C++ compiler (supporting C++11) and a ``make`` installed.
  41. Run the ``bootstrap`` script you find in the source directory of CMake.
  42. You can use the ``--help`` option to see the supported options.
  43. You may use the ``--prefix=<install_prefix>`` option to specify a custom
  44. installation directory for CMake. You can run the ``bootstrap`` script from
  45. within the CMake source directory or any other build directory of your
  46. choice. Once this has finished successfully, run ``make`` and
  47. ``make install``. In summary::
  48. $ ./bootstrap && make && sudo make install
  49. Windows

  51. You need to download and install a binary release of CMake in order to build
  52. CMake. You can get these releases from the `CMake Download Page`_. Then
  53. proceed with the instructions below.

  55. Building CMake with CMake
  56. -------------------------
  57. You can build CMake as any other project with a CMake-based build system:
  58. run the installed CMake on the sources of this CMake with your preferred
  59. options and generators. Then build it and install it.

  62. To build the documentation, install `Sphinx`_ and configure CMake with
  63. ``-DSPHINX_HTML=ON`` and/or ``-DSPHINX_MAN=ON`` to enable the "html" or
  64. "man" builder. Add ``-DSPHINX_EXECUTABLE=/path/to/sphinx-build`` if the
  65. tool is not found automatically.
